Toothache

The primary cause of toothaches is tooth decay.   The bacteria in the mouth lives on sugars and starches which we get from the food that we eat.  The sticky plaque that clings to the surface of the teeth is formed because of these bacteria.

The bacteria in plaque produce acids that eat through the hard white coating of the teeth.  This creates the cavity.

Initial sign of tooth decay could be a sensation of pain whenever you eat something very cold, hot, or sweet. When this happens, it's time to see a dentist.

What you can do when you have a toothache
  • Toothache does not excuse anybody to skip brushing the teeth.  Just do it gently
  • Rinse your mouth, preferably with warm water.
  • Use dental floss to remove food particles between your teeth.
  • Over-the-counter pain reliever can help.
  • An antiseptic with benzocaine can relieve the pain temporarily.
  • Important note: aspirin or other pain killer can cause irritation and may burn the gum if applied directly.
  • If there are signs of infection, visit your dentist the soonest time possible. (pain when you bite, inflammation, redness, discharge)
  • If your toothache persists for more than a day or two, you have a fever and/or having difficulty breathing or swallowing, better call your dentist immediately.
